- Corteva Agriscience announced its decision to stop the production of the
controversial insecticide chlorpyrifos, which is linked to neurological
developmental issues in children, by the end of the year. The largest
manufacturer of the chemical said the decision was taken due to declining sales
amid weak demand, even though it continues to believe that chlorpyrifos is safe. The news comes as California banned
manufacturers from selling the agricultural chemical as of February 6, while
farmers in the state cannot use chlorpyrifos products after December 31.
Various states including New York, and the European Union are also preparing to
ban the harmful chemical.
For
years, environmental groups have been forcing the authorities to ban the
neurotoxic pesticide that has been linked to low birth weight, lower IQ and
attention disorders in children. In
the year 2000, the U.S. banned it from residential use after scientific study
revealed that the pesticide poses a clear risk to children, farmworkers, and
users of rural drinking water.
Meanwhile,
the Environmental Protection Agency or EPA continued to defend its safety for
agricultural uses. Under President Donald Trump, the agency reversed the ban on
chlorpyrifos use citing lack of enough evidence to link it to children's health
problems. This was despite calls from EPA scientists and the American Academy
of Pediatrics to ban the insecticide.

LET’S GET RID OF FACTORY FARMS
BY 2040
The problems with
factory farms are broad and well documented. Factory farms confine animals in
crowded conditions indoors, often severely restricting their movement. Because
they rely heavily on animal drugs to suppress disease and get animals to
slaughter more quickly, factory farms can create food safety threats from
resistant bacteria and drug residues. Factory farms also rely upon excessive
amounts of water and endanger communities by contaminating their sources of
drinking water, and are a leading contributor of climate change.
The Farm System Reform
Act would also put a moratorium on new industrial factory farms and phrase out
all factory farms by 2040. It would crack down on meatpacking monopolies, and
help independent farmers and ranchers transition to sustainable, humane
practices. Tell your representatives in Congress to
co-sponsor the Farm System Reform Act!

Soon after genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were introduced into the food supply, several veterinarians noticed a profound decline in the health of dogs and cats. Allergies, chronic diarrhea, and itching were among the immediate symptoms noted; cancer and shorter lifespans were later reported. When Jeffrey Smith surveyed subscribers to the Institute for Responsible Technology, 80 reported improvements in their pets’ health after switching them to non-GMO and organic diets. These correlated with similar improvements reported by more than 3,200 people who made the dietary switch.
