THINKING POSITIVE FOR THE NEW YEAR:
If you are like me, reading or listening to the news
can be pretty depressing.  And, gosh, the name of
my org.  – “Toxics Information”, has a bit of gloom to it
However, I seek to counteract that by pointing out
that our bodies are wonderful entities that have
fantastic ability to stay healthy – with the right kind
of care!  And, that kinda holds true for lots of the
bad stuff going on around this planet.
So, my philosophy is to seek and nurture that which
has the power to do good,  in all ways possible.
So, this will be an all-positive issue of TIP TALKS\

TWO MORE HATS FOR COUNTERING “TOXICS”:
Besides my work with TIP, as some of you may know,
I have two other “hats” – ways in which I work for
a better life and planet.  One is support for the solar
inventions of my husband, Paul Klinkman – vs. the
toxic mess produced by fossil fuels,  nuclear radiation
& waste.  The other is my long time study and sharing
re: the psychology of violence, hatred & fear among
humans, and ways to counteract this kind of toxicity.

THE GOOD NEWS:  In all of these areas of concern,
there really are ways to be successful – and examples
of such transformation, and I plan to continue to
share them in whatever ways I can.  Can one small
person make a big difference?  Only sometimes.
But the point for me is that:
1.    I am blessed to constantly meet some great folks
who are working for positive change.
2.    I identify myself as “Jenny” (my first name) Appleseed”,
planting seeds of positive change.  I may not see them sprout,
but they provide the opportunity for that.
ALL CAN HELP – PLANT YOUR OWN SEEDS FOR GOOD,
AND WE’LL ALL HAVE A LOT MORE OF THAT GROWING!
(See examples of successes in this TIP TALKS – and some
other types in my presentation on January 12, if you are local).

CONNECTICUT STATE LEGISLATURE BANS
RESIDENTIAL MOSQUITO MISTERS
https://beyondpesticides.org/dailynewsblog/2018/05/connecticut-state-legislature-bans-residential-mosquito-misters/
(Beyond Pesticides, May 23, 2018) Earlier this month,
the Connecticut state legislature voted to ban the use
of residential pesticide misting systems. (These are
devices that are typically placed outdoors and spray
insecticides –mostly in an attempt to control mosquitoes.)
This is the latest move from a state legislature that has
also recently banned the use of bee-toxic neonicotinoids
and stopped the use of hazardous lawn care pesticides
on public playgrounds. The vote was unanimous in the
state Senate, and won by a count of 132-17 in the state House.                  ***************************************************

VERIZON DROPS SMALL CELL WIRELESS

Burlington, MA, October 23, 2018
http://www.bcattv.org/bnews/top-stories/verizon-drops-small-cell-wireless-booster-application-in-face-of-fees/
A proposed wireless signal booster project that had
drawn some tough questions was pulled last night.
Verizon Wireless representative Attorney Daniel Klasnick
said his client would rather pull the project for seven
small cell boosters planned for telephone poles around
town than face a fee that was a condition being discussed
by members of the Board of Selectmen.

        COURT SHUTS DOWN OFFSHORE
      AQUACULTURE IN GULF OF MEXICO
September 25, 2018,  Fishing and public interest groups
stop unprecedented industrial aquaculture program
https://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2018/09/25/court-shuts-down-offshore-aquaculture-gulf-mexico
“All of us that depend on the Gulf for our communities
and livelihood are profoundly grateful that the Court has
struck down this dangerous scheme, that would have
polluted our waters and damaged our way of life,” said
Gulf fisherman and Gulf Fishermen’s Association counsel
William Ward. “Today is a great day.”  The federal permitting
scheme, struck down by the Court today, would have
allowed up to 20 industrial facilities and collectively
64 million pounds of fish to be grown each year in the Gulf.
Industrial aquaculture in open waters, such as the ones
proposed, are associated with many serious environmental
and health concerns, including: the escape of farmed fish
into the wild; outcompeting wild fish for habitat; food and
mates or intermixing with wild fish and altering their genetics
and behaviors; the spread of diseases and parasites from
farmed fish to wild fish and other marine life; and pollution
from excess feed, wastes and any antibiotics or other chemicals
used flowing through the open pens into natural waters.

COURT ORDERS EPA TO BAN CHLORPYRIFOS,
A PESTICIDE LINKED TO BRAIN DAMAGE IN KIDS
          Pediatricians warned that keeping it
on the market put “all children at risk.”
www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/epa-ban-pesticide-chlorpyrifos_us_5b6c6d0ce4b0ae32af96318e
08/09/2018 Updated Aug 10, 2018
A federal court on Thursday ordered the Environmental
Protection Agency to ban a widely used pesticide that’s
been linked to learning disabilities in children and that
former agency chief Scott Pruitt refused to take off the market.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled in a 2-to-1
decision that the EPA offered “no defense” of its decision to
delay a ban on chlorpyrifos ― a move the court said violated
the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The law governs
pesticides and requires the EPA to ban chemicals from being
used on food if they are proven to cause harm.
The agency has 60 days to finalize a ban.

A big “thank you” this week to the Tucson, Arizona, OCA
members who convinced their local co-op, Food Conspiracy,
to stop selling  Ben & Jerry’s.  Several of our supporters
emailed Food Conspiracy’s store manager and its board
of directors. Within hours, the co-op posted this on Facebook:

"Thanks to the Co-op owners who let us know their concerns
about Ben & Jerry's Ice cream and glyphosate contamination.
We have discontinued it from our frozen section.  We are excited
about the  possibility of an organic line of Ben & Jerry's in the
future and are beyond humbled by the collective power of
consumer voice speaking up and demanding it.  Food Conspiracy
joins other co-ops who are listening to their owner/customers,
including Moscow Food Co-Op in Moscow, Idaho; New Pioneer
Food Co-Op in Coralville, Iowa; and Ypsilanti Food Co-Op and
River Street Bakery in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Could your co-op be the next one to #DumpBenandJerry's?"
And, if we all work together on the national front, maybe
we can get National Co+op Grocers (NCG) to stop promoting
Ben & Jerry’s.  More here on how you can help:

Find out if your natural food store or co-op sells Ben & Jerry’s
If it does, send this letter to the store manager
Let us know what happens when you contact your store
If your store isn't on our list, please email
campaigns@organicconsumers.org to let us know.
Download this flyer and hand it out in front of your
local Ben & Jerry’s retailer
Download this glyphosate fact sheet and share it widely
NOTE:  We should also continue urging Unilever
(Now owners of B & J)  to go organic
          – or at least  non-GMO/non-glyphosate.

(Meanwhile, be aware that several Haagen Daas
flavors are non-GMO – look carefully at the label
                  for that designation.)
