On Friday, August 10, a California jury found chemical giant,
Monsanto, liable in an unprecedented lawsuit.

COURT ORDERS E.P.A. TO BAN CHLORPYRIFOS,
PESTICIDE TIED TO CHILDREN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS
www.nytimes.com/2018/08/09/us/politics/chlorpyrifos-pesticide-ban-epa-court.html
Aug. 9, 2018 WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court
ordered the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday
to bar within 60 days a widely used pesticide associated
with developmental disabilities and other health problems
in children, dealing the industry a major blow after it had
successfully lobbied the Trump administration to reject a ban.

USEFUL WARNINGS & ACTION
**************************************************
STOP MONSANTO'S TOXIC TRICKS!
TAKE ACTION: Tell Congress to stop Monsanto’s Toxic Tricks!
Protect local rights to restrict pesticides!
Wish your local government would stop your neighbors from
spraying Monsanto’s carcinogenic Roundup herbicide?
The Supreme Court says localities have the power, under
federal law, to regulate pesticides. But Monsanto has
pressured 43 states to pass preemption laws that block
localities from acting. There are only seven states (Alaska,
Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, Utah and Vermont)
where localities can protect human health, pollinators
and endangered species from pesticides.
Now that the merger with Bayer has made Monsanto
even more powerful, Bayer-Monsanto is trying to change
federal law to take away local governments’ rights to
regulate pesticides in all 50 states.
To do this, the biotech giant has slipped a toxic trick into
the House version of the Farm Bill. It would amend federal
law to specifically prohibit localities from doing anything
about pesticides.
Luckily, Monsanto’s toxic trick isn’t in the Senate version.
The Farm Bill conference committee is currently working
to draft a final version of the bill and if they hear from
enough constituents—this is an election year, after all—
they can be convinced to leave it out.

** CLEVER CONSUMER (That’s you!)
CAMPAIGN REMINDER: TIP TALKS seeks to
increase your consumer IQ & abilities. Remember,
if you tell the supplier, retailer, or producer what
you will or won’t BUY, they care.
(Also share your knowledge with friends & family)
QUICK TIP: Smart consumers don’t buy food in
plastic jars– not even “organic”. Go with glass!

GET GLYPHOSATE OUT OF OUR FOOD!
New EWG analysis has found that popular children’s
foods like cereal, granola bars, and instant oatmeal
come with a hefty dose of glyphosate, the cancer-causing ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup. That’s unacceptable.
Monsanto was recently ordered to pay $289 million in
damages after a jury found the pesticide giant liable
for causing a school groundskeeper’s cancer.
Glyphosate is dangerous, especially for kids.
The EPA calculated that 1-to-2-year-old children are
likely to have the highest exposure to glyphosate.
Glyphosate is showing up in food made with oats
because oats and wheat are sprayed with glyphosate
to kill the crop right before harvesting. It is a practice
that is not necessary and should be stopped.

Companies need to step up and make sure their products
are free of glyphosate before they hit store shelves.
Stand with Just Label It and EWG today! Add your name
to the petition calling on General Mills, Kellogg’s and Quaker
to make sure their products are free of glyphosate!

SAFER SCHOOL SUPPLIES: SHOPPING GUIDE
Consumer Guide for Finding Non-Toxic School Supplies
Released by: U.S. PIRG Education Fund
Release date: Tuesday, August 7, 2018
We conducted laboratory tests for toxic chemicals in
popular school supplies. Researchers tested markers
(washable and dry-erase), crayons, glue (liquid and sticks),
spiral notebooks, rulers, 3-ring binders, lunchboxes, and
water bottles for toxic chemicals such as lead, asbestos, phthalates, BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylene), and bisphenol-A (BPA).

We purchased the supplies from across the country at a
wide variety of stores including big box stores, dollar stores, drug stores, online retailers, and arts and crafts stores.

Among the school supplies surveyed, we found
Playskool crayons from Dollar Tree that contained
asbestos, a 3-ring binder from Dollar Tree that contained
high levels of phthalates, a dry-erase markers containing benzene, and we highlight two water bottles that have
been recalled due to high levels of lead. This guide
not only lists the potentially dangerous school supplies
that we found and why and how the school supplies can
harm students, but also lists the school supplies that
tested negative for chemicals of concern.

With this Safer School Supplies: Shopping Guide, parents, teachers, and students can make more informed decisions
while shopping for school supplies this Back to School
season. We want to give parents and teachers the option
to choose school supplies that do not contain toxic chemicals.
This Shopping Guide should serve as a handy tool for finding products free of several types of toxic chemicals.
