How to Grow Fresh Air

50 Houseplants That Purify Your Home or Office

By Dr. B.C. Wolverton

144 pages, 6.57 x 9.40in ,| 01 Apr 1997, Penguin  $17

How pure is the air you breathe?  Plants are the lungs of the earth: they produce the oxygen that makes life possible, add precious moisture, and filter toxins. Houseplants can perform these essential functions in your home or office with the same efficiency as a rainforest in our biosphere.  In research designed to create a breathable environment for a NASA lunar habitat, noted scientist Dr. B.C. Wolverton discovered that houseplants are the best filters of common pollutants such as ammonia, formaldehyde, and benzene.  Hundreds of these poisonous chemicals can be released by furniture, carpets, and building material, and then trapped by closed ventilation systems, leading to the host of respiratory and allergic reactions now called Sick Building Syndrome.

In this full-color, easy-to-follow guide, Dr. Wolverton shows you how to grow and nurture 50 plants as accessible and trouble-free as the tulip and the Boston fern, and includes many beautiful but commonly found varieties not generally thought of as indoor plants. He also rates each plant for its effectiveness in removing pollutants, and its ease of growth and maintenance.  Studies show that Americans spend ninety percent of their lives indoors, which means that good indoor air quality is vital for good health. How to Grow Fresh Air will show you how to purify the environment that has the most impact on you.

Eye See You

by Storey Publishing

64 pages, 9 3/8 x 12 trim size, full-color photographs throughout.  $10

Think of all of the things you do with your eyes: sensing light and dark, telling what color something is, and seeing where you are going. Even though you have five senses, you depend on your eyesight more than the other four.

For many animals living in the wild, eyesight is very important for hunting, finding food, and protecting themselves from other animals. But not all animals see the same way we do.
Many animals can’t see the same range of colors that you can. Dogs don't see any colors at all. Bees and butterflies see lots of colors, but not the same ones that you see. For many animals, seeing in the dark is much more important than being able to see color. You will find pictures of lots of amazing animals in this fun poster collection. And on the back of each poster, you can read more about the way each animal sees. So go ahead, take a good look, and stare right back at these animal eyes!

HANDLING VIOLENCE & BULLYING

The Rock (Videotape)

Liberty Goodwin, producer , Liberty Literary Works, 32 Minutes, includes manual, $20

"The Rock", inspired by a true experience, is the story of a girl who must deal with an older, larger boy who is bullying her. The video is a good lead-in for discussing nonviolent responses to bullying, or for kids role-playing alternate endings. We tuck a 24 page manual inside the video box.

The video benefits from taut writing around a timely subject -- bullying. We also made good use of the filmmaking talent available at the Ocelo Film School, which was in Sarasota, Florida, at the time -- our video crew got the most out of our child actors, and our post-production editing was first-rate. We find that kids are pretty much glued to the story.

Safe Passage on City Streets

Dorothy T. Samuel, Liberty Literary Works, Third edition, $10

“Safe Passage on City Streets” sets out, in logical order, a set of principles for dealing nonviolently with personal attackers.  Each principle is explained with true stories.  A number of college instructors have been using “Safe Passage on City Streets” as a course textbook.

The second and third editions contain an additional section that discusses date rape.  Note:  The cover has changed from the second edition to the third edition.

For Liberty Literary Works, call (401)-351-9193. Yes, we answer detailed questions over the phone about either book.

Victories Without Violence

Anna Ruth Fry, Liberty Literary works

“Victories Without Violence” is a collection of 100 word to 1000 word true stories about nonviolence, from tales of personal courage in the face of war or other danger, to tales of military invasions that turned into joyous picnics.  $5.
