SOME OPTIONS FOR IMMUNE SUPPORT VS. FLU VIRUSES

Avoiding contact with virus carriers is a rational action, but there is another that is ignored by mainstream media TIP has collected brief info on such immune-boosting options. No claims for "cures" but many have been shown to assist your body in the struggle for health against viruses. Anyway, consider trying a couple - can't hurt. (unless you have an allergy or drug conflict). Natural Preventatives/Remedies for the Flu

QUICK WAYS TO KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST
REALLY GOOD INFO ON LESS-TOXIC ALTERNATIVES & IMPORTANT ACTIONS

**SIGN UP FOR OUR BRIEF MONTHLY
TIP TALKS E-NEWSLETTER.

It includes brief summaries of the latest news, resources and actions on important health & environmental matters. (Note: We rarely send any other posts, except really urgent alerts, and we do not share your E-Mail with anyone. JUST E-MAIL US AT: TIPTALKS@toxicsinfo.org (We share with no one, and won’t send you other stuff).

** QUICKLY FIND WHAT YOU SEEK MIDST THE GREAT AMOUNT OF INFORMATION & ARTICLES ON THE TIP WEBSITE!

**UTILIZE OUR “DUCK-DUCK-GO SEARCH ENGINE: Just to the right, above our Action Corner, this will quickly take you to any information on our site regarding a topic or key word you choose.

SEE OUR ACTION CORNER FOR IMPORTANT ONGOING ACTIONS, CONCERNS & RESOURCES

TIP deals with a tremendous amount of information and actions, with a small budget and staff. This makes it difficult to do complete updates as things unfold. So, we are planning to use brief notes at the top of columns on especially active pages to keep things up to date, to be followed later with more extensive edits and additions.

In fact, we are thinking to make revisions to the entire site the focus in the coming year, along with enhanced work on our Creative & Clever Consumer Campaign..

THE TIP CREATIVE & CLEVER CONSUMERS CAMPAIGN

TIP continues to engage legislative (and regulatory) struggles at the national and state levels. However, we are increasingly putting more emphasis on the only real power vs. corporate interests that they can’t remove – the power of the purse. Educated consumers can refuse to buy unhealthy products, depriving the corporate sellers of the only thing about which they care – money.

THE KEYS: KNOW WHAT’S WHAT, CHOOSE WISELY,
TELL THEM!

**USE TIP AND OTHER INDEPENDENT SOURCES TO FIGURE OUT THE REAL DOPE ABOUT WHICH PRODUCTS ARE SAFER

**CHOOSE THE BEST OPTIONS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE, AVOIDING THE TOXIC CONTAMINATION IN SO MANY PRODUCTS TODAY

**TELL THE COMPANIES THAT PRODUCE AND RETAILERS THAT SELL WHICH ONES YOU WILL OR WILL NOT BUY – AND WHY!

THE THIRD OF THESE ACTIONS IS IN MANY WAYS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND LEAST CARRIED OUT –THEY NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU’LL BUY, AND WHY – TO FEEL YOUR FULL POWER TO INFLUENCE WHAT THEY PRODUCE & SELL!

UPDATE ON RI GMO LABELING WORK:

(Contact us if you wish to connect with work in other states)\

NEW FOR 2016: The GMO Labeling cause has become more complex, as it has evolved into a State vs. Federal dogfight (with the Feds being more influenced than some states, such as Vermont, Maine and Connecticut. So, the most important action has become protecting already passed labeling laws from federal preemption.

**LEGISLATION: We are working with supportive legislators on new, amended GMO Labeling bills for each session come under consideration in the RI House & Senate. Then, we’ll be pressing for passage.

**SURVEYS: Surveys for your legislator to educate them & inform you on their thinking and position on GMO labeling are available at: reach out to all our RI legislators with a printed survey

**FURTHER INFORMATION & PUBLICITY MATERIALS

CALL TO ACTION – PROTECT OUR FOOD SUPPLY
& YOUR RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHAT YOU EAT

(YOU CAN USE THE TIME BETWEEN LEGISLATIVE SESSIONS TO EDUCATE THOSE WHO CLAIM TO REPRESENT YOU)

Bills to require labeling of GMOs will come up again before the Rhode Island House Health, Education & Welfare Committee (HEW) and the Rhode Island Senate Health & Human Services Committee.

How can you help in this effort? Learn more about the issue, then take action by contacting a committee member.

Some suggested talking points:

I HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN MY FOOD

WHEREAS : There are competing claims, controversy & debate about the potential effects of GMOs and their accompanying herbicides on human health. Proponents & producers say “perfectly safe” and “no evidence of human health effects. Independent sources raise questions & concerns. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine says, “GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy & immune function, reproductive, metabolic, physiologic & genetic health & are without benefit”(www.aaemonline.org/gmopost.html )

WHEREAS : No one can claim certainty about their positions. Research is limited & sometimes biased by commercial funding & influence. Some substances approved for human consumption have had to be removed from the market later because of bad health effects. For more information on this, go to: www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6759000)

WHEREAS : 63 governments around the world have felt it prudent to label GMO ingredients in food products. (See: http://gmoinside.org/64-countries-around-the-world-label-ge-food) If there is “no evidence” of possible harm, why would so many take such action?

WHEREAS : The labeling of GMO ingredients in other countries has not resulted in any significant Increase in food costs. Companies change labels all the time, most recently for RGBH, with a disclaimer re: potential harm
www.naturalnews.com/
031399_GMOs_food_labeling.html#ixzz2i2PWiWdZ
)

As a Rhode Island resident & American citizen, call on state legislators to pass H7042, the bill that will require labeling of GMO ingredients in food products for human consumption. Connecticut has done it, Maine has done it – we can join them. In unity there is strength!

STRONGLY STATE THAT, WITH THE LACK OF CLARITY AND UNANIMITY ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF GMOS ON AGRICULTURE, HEALTH & CONTROL OF OUR FOOD SUPPLY, WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE THE CHOICE FOR OURSELVES ON WHETHER OR NOT
TO BUY AND EAT THEM

(Corporate interests have the right to spend some of their millions of dollars on advertising to convince me to buy their products – but not to force them on us, without my
knowledge or consent).

Lighting the Way to Less Toxic Living

CANARIES & KIDS: PROTECTING THE MOST VULNERABLE

In the old days, a miner would take a canary with him down the shaft as a warning. If the bird keeled over and died, the miner knew it was a sign of something toxic in the air, and if he didn’t get out of there, he would be next to get sick. Today the term “canary” is used for humans who are more sensitive than most to the toxic fumes from many common chemicals. Some of those susceptible to adverse reactions are people with asthma, allergies, sinusitis, and a variety of health conditions that weaken the immune system. Children, as well, are greatly affected by environmental toxins.

TIP’S MISSION IS TO HELP THOSE ALREADY AFFECTED - AND INFORM EVERYONE ELSE ABOUT THEIR OWN VULNERABILITY TO THE SAME TOXIC CHEMICALS - WITH INFORMATION ABOUT HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVES!

CONCERNS

HEALTH CONNECTIONS

Some of the most important people to keep informed about our concerns are health care professionals and educators. They are probably the most influential sources to which the public turns for knowledge and advice. Yet, too often the kind of information medical & academic personnel receive is heavily influenced by chemical and pharmaceutical industry bias. Therefore, one of TIP’s major goals in 2007 is to find and share well-researched reports and articles from respected, reputable sources about the connections between environmental pollutants and health conditions.

The major ones about which more and more information is emerging are asthma, learning disabilities, endocrine disruption and cancer. Pesticides, cleaning materials and fragranced products are the most common concerns about which TIP will be providing articles based on up-to-date research. In addition, we are exploring ways to offer presentations to groups of health professionals.

2007 Health Connections Programs

HISPANIC/LATINO HEALTH EDUCATION INITIATIVE

A Collaborative Effort to Provide Information to Spanish Speakers on Toxics in Everyday Life & Healthier Alternatives Plans are underway, with the assistance of a small advisory group of health educators. We have begun distributing a survey of what people use and of reactions to household chemicals, and are collecting relevant materials in Spanish. A member of our advisory group is translating a basic TIP informational flyer into Spanish for us. We expect in 2007 to continue sharing Spanish informational materials through our networking efforts, and make them available on a new Spanish page on our website.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS & BREAST CANCER RISK:
Are Chemicals in Common, Everyday Products Linked to Breast Cancer?

An Ounce of Prevention Could Help Save Your Health & Life

A presentation provided by the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC), in partnership with the Rhode Island Breast Cancer Coalition (RIBCC). Co-Sponsors of the event include: Toxics Information Project (TIP), URI Women's Center and URI Women's Studies Department. A reception followed the talk, held at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston Campus Memorial Union, with further opportunity for questions/discussion. Some articles on chemicals relationship to cancer may be found by scrolling down at: www.toxicsinfo.org/healthconnections.htm

****************************************************

IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality) - THE INSIDE STORY

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has made it quite clear that Indoor in workplaces, schools and in the home. It also causes accessibility problems for many. In testimony given at the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities (GCD) Forums in August 2005, 50 pages spoke of the need for greater protection of those especially vulnerable to common chemicals, including people with asthma and other respiratory conditions. TIP is working with GCD, RIACC and others on responses to the problems described. The GCD Legislation Committee made our accessibility concerns # 2 in their 2006 priorities list, & TIP Director Liberty Goodwin a member of the group.

*****************************************************

“ PESTICIDE-FREE PLAYING FIELDS” INITIATIVE

The health of more and more children and teachers is being affected by commonly used chemicals. Asthma, allergies, autism and childhood cancer are all on the rise, and connections with these conditions have been made by numerous scientific studies and reports. Inhalant abuse of household products is also a growing problem. Many schools, towns and states are taking action to protect kids by reducing their exposure to problem products. Everyone involved with young people should be informed about this! TIP held a School Toxics Forum in 2006 on this concern.

BREAST CANCER & ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH ACT

This federal legislation would establish a national strategy to study the links between the environment and breast cancer. This legislation would authorize the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a peer reviewed research program of grants for the establishment of collaborative centers of research to study environmental factors that are believed to contribute to the development of breast cancer. Specifically, $30 million per year in fiscal years 2007-2012 would be authorized for this purpose. Under a competitive, peer-reviewed grant-making process that would involve trained consumers in the decision making process, the NIH director would award grants to conduct multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary research using a broad definition of environment through a national network of collaborative centers. be funded each year.

RI INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY BILL

A bill calling for minimum standards for Indoor Environmental Quality was drafted by the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities (GCD) in cooperation with TIP, and introduced in both the RI State Senate & House in 2006. Hearings were held in March before the Senate Health & Human Services Committee, and the House Environment & Natural Resources Committee & in April before the House Health & Human Services . On May 23, 2006, the RI State Senate passed a Resolution Urging the Department of Administration to Use Environmentally-Safe & Health-Friendly Cleaning Products in State Facilities & Workplaces, based on the proposed bill, S2627. We will continue efforts to obtain stronger legislation and/or an Executive Order from the Governor, addressing this concern, while encouraging implementation of the resolution.

COMMENTS ON BREATHING SUPPORT METHODS DURING VIRUS OUTBREAKS

There are two fundamentally different approaches for enabling victims of viruses like COVID 19 (which creates fluids in human lungs) to survive long enough for their bodies to develop enough antibodies to rid their bodies of such deadly viruses.  The second option may seem odd, but was used during the Spanish Flu with some value. TWO DISCUSSIONS

LED BY LIBERTY GOODWIN,

TIP DIRECTOR

First given at the Riverside & Seekonk Libraries, now available to your group.

FOOD FACTS & FANTASY

Consumers are bombarded with information about what and how to eat. Much of this advice is conflicting or commercially motivated, some just confusing or difficult to follow. Liberty will offer simple tips on how to choose the healthiest food options and avoid those that are harmful.

COMMON SENSE ABOUT CLEANING

Clear up the confusion of commercial advertising claims about cleaning products. “Green” living is about more than energy efficiency, recycling and solar panels. Human health and the environment go hand in hand. Liberty will discuss ways that household products can impact both, and will offer simple steps to a really “green” household.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO HELP EDUCATE PARENTS & OTHERS ON HOW TO PROTECT KIDS IN RHODE ISLAND FROM TOXIC CHEMICALS IN THEIR TOYS & OTHER PRODUCTS!

The RI Children’s Product Safety Act: did not succeed last year. Federal legislation was passed to strengthen regulations and oversight of a variety of products by the consumer product safety commission. However, it only mentions phthalates by name, not bisphenol-A. Also, federal agencies have a track record of sometimes taking many years to even begin work on mandated actions. And the research on which they rely is often tainted by industry involvement. THE BEST PROTECTION FOR OUR KIDS IS EDUCATED CONSUMERS!
